Ren Han carves four falling human figures into a plasterboard wall. Inspired by the mythological characters depicted by Goltzius and van Haarlem—figures who were cast down for attempting to breach the realm of the gods—the work evokes both the heroism and the hubris of transgression. The ruptured surfaces expose soft acoustic cotton and rigid metal frames beneath, mimicking flesh and bone. The wall becomes both monument and wounded body.
Created in the aftermath of the global pandemic, this work reflects on the vulnerability of human civilization when faced with ungovernable forces—technological acceleration, ecological collapse, and systemic imbalance. Here, “falling” is no longer metaphor or myth, but material: an act of revealing, undoing, and confronting what lies beneath the constructed surface of stability.
